Period 2 and 3 1/19/2007

Today we began our discussion of branched chain alkanes, and isomers. You did an activity in class that asked you to make and draw structures for butane, pentane, and hexane, and to make structures and draw some of their possible isomers.
Next class we will work on naming using IUPAC rules. Your only homework is to read the handout.

1/10/2007 Period 2 and 3 1/11/2007 Period 6

Hey guys,
Sorry its been awhile since my last post. New change. I will post info about class today in addition to homework:

Daily Check:
What is a hydrocarbon. Give one example.

In class:
We had an activity in which you were asked to examine 23 items, to determine which items were made from petroleum.
Next we talked about the naming of the first 10 alkanes:

Number of carbons Name
1 Methane
2 Ethane
3 Propane
4 Butane
5 Pentane
6 Hexane
7 Heptane
8 Octane
9 Nonane
10 Decane

Next I talked about intermolecular forces, and how they affect the state the compond is in: Gas liquid or solid.
Then I talked about the boiling point of a compoun beind related to the strength of intermolecular forces and the size of the molecule.

Homework:
Using the table on page 220 in your book, you were asked to plot the boiling point of the first 10 alkanes as a function of the number of carbons. You graph should have the number of carbons (1-10) on the x axis, and the boiling points on the y axis. Be careful some of the boiling points are negative. Next draw a line through the point, and predict the boiling point for the 12 carbon molecule dodecane.
Lastly for extra credit, I asked you to use the formula CnH2n+2 to write the names for the next 4 larger molecule, those containg 13-16 carbons.
Come see me for help if you need it. I can also how you how to doe graph in Excel if you want. Sign up on tutoring log.

See you
